Arnold Verne Bergeson, 101, Dies; La Mesan Was College Dean

The Utah native served in the Army during World War II.

Arnold Verne Bergeson, 101, a former San Diego City College dean who lived in La Mesa for nearly 60 years, died June 3, according to Legacy.com.

Born in Lewiston, Utah as the seventh of 12 children, he became a teacher, including serving as a flight instructor before his 1944 discharge from the Army. He also taught high school English, music and speech before moving on community colleges. He retired as a dean at San Diego City College.

He enjoyed fishing and took on leadership roles within his church, including bishop to a local ward. He moved to La Mesa with his late wife Mildred in 1954.

“He loved to tell stories, always sharing his contagious laugh and smile; he provided his family with unconditional love and wisdom, teaching each to believe in themselves while supporting every interest and dream,” the report said.

Services for the father of five and grandfather of nine were held Saturday.
