Smoke Testing of La Mesa Sewer Pipes to Begin Next Week

Smoking testing, a tool used to detect defects in the sewer pipes and system, will begin June 17.

From a City of La Mesa release

The City of La Mesa has awarded a contract to conduct smoke testing of the sewer pipes in the south west section of the city starting June 17. Smoking testing is a tool that the City uses to detect defects in the sewer pipes and system.

The testing will begin in the area between El Cajon Boulevard and University Avenue from La Mesa Boulevard west to city limits. The testing will progress south and finish in the area between University Avenue and State Route 94 from Spring Street west to city limits.

An informational flyer will be distributed to the neighborhood 48-hours prior to the start of work. This door hanger contains useful information regarding the smoke testing procedure. The work is tentatively scheduled to begin Monday June 17, 2013 and is expected to take about 6 weeks.

Field crews will be performing inspections of all manholes in the area. Field crews will not have to enter a home or business; however, the contractor may need to access side and back yards if smoke is exiting from these areas.

Information gained from this study will be used to repair and improve the wastewater collection system. Emergency service providers will also be notified of this upcoming event.

We apologize for any inconvenience during the smoke testing period. Should you have any questions, please call the City of La Mesa Engineering Division at 619.667.1166.
