Grossmont Baseball Coach Jim Earley Quits Amid Parent Accusations

Father of pitching star Robby Nesovic says Earley handled money in violation of district policy.

Updated at 9:35 p.m. May 18, 2012 Grossmont High School baseball coach Jim Earley, who resigned this week after ending the season with 20 straight losses, is under fire from a parent who accuses him of misusing money from the program and running a booster club that violates district rules. In a Nov. 9, 2011, memo to Principal Dan Barnes, Danilo “Dan” Nesovic made a series of complaints, including: The Grossmont Union High School District on Friday said Earley has retired, and East County Sports quoted Earley as saying: “I want to spend more time with my family, especially my two sons who are 9 and 10.” But documents obtained by Patch indicate four-year head coach Earley, as president of a nonprofit called Blue and Gold Baseball Inc., …

Frank Passiglia For many years the Early Family has had a very positive and influential involvement with Grossmont's baseball program. In the years I was involved with the program, when my son played, I saw nothing but hard work, long hours and dedication put forth by both Jim Early and his wonderful mother Patsy. It's sad and disheartening to now see something of such a petty nature being played…   more ›

Grossmont Falls to Torrey Pines in CIF Division I Volleyball Quarterfinals

Falcons upset the host Foothillers in five games; GHS ended remarkable season with a record of 29-6.

In a hard fought match Saturday evening, Grossmont High School was upset by visiting Torrey Pines in the second round of the CIF San Diego Division I volleyball playoffs. It seemed at first that No. 6 seed Torrey Pines might take No. 3 seed Grossmont in 1-2-3 fashion, but the Hillers leaped ahead to win the third game, and then dominated the fourth, up 20-7 at one point. The Falcons edged the Foothillers 15-12 in the decisive fifth game to raise their record to 20-13. With Grossmont Principal Dan Barnes looking on, the Falcons beat GHS in the first two games 25-23 and 25-21. The Foothillers won the next two games 25-23 and 25-13. The quarterfinal match was punctuated with long volleys that were applauded by fans on both sides. The Hillers…

Sanders Jokingly Refers to Raiders Fans as ‘Subhuman’ During Salute to Seau

Cheers greet San Diego mayor's knock against rival Oakland, booed several times at event.

San Diego Mayor Jerry Sanders on Friday night was among many civic lights and NFL stars to hail Junior Seau at his Celebration of Life at Qualcomm Stadium. He also got a dig in against Oakland Raiders fans. Sanders said perhaps the highest compliment paid Seau was that he was “always the object of the loudest, nastiest, stupidest chants from the knuckle-dragging hoard of subhumans otherwise known as Raider fans.’’ About a quarter of Qualcomm Stadium was filled on Friday night for a public memorial for the former San Diego Chargers linebacker, who was buried earlier in the morning in his native Oceanside. Several former Chargers shared stories at the Celebration of Life for Seau, who was found dead in his Oceanside home last week of a self…

Distant Cheers: Junior Seau Fan Pays Respects from the Nosebleed Section

Chargers great was saluted from near and far at free Qualcomm Stadium Celebration of Life.

Down on the stage, facing perhaps 15,000 fans, NFL and civic celebrities recalled Junior Seau. Up across Qualcomm Stadium, facing the setting sun, 31-year-old graphic artist Alex Gaytan* of Chula Vista was alone but for two strangers who saw him in the highest row of seats, and came to join him. “My first Chargers game, my dad brought me here when I was this high,” Gaytan said of his father, Jesus, still living. “It was up here. That was the first time I saw Seau play.” With blue GREATNE55 jerseys draped over adjacent seats, he explained: “So I figure there’s no better place to sit and pay my respects than by sitting next to 55. That’s why I’m here.” In Section 55. Near or far, all perspectives were represented Friday night at a free …

A private celebration for the fallen former NFL star brought friends and family to Calvary Chapel in Oceanside Friday.

Some 2,000 friends and family of Junior Seau gathered at Calvary Chapel in Oceanside to say farewell to the NFL legend. “It was beautiful,” Lauren Godinet, Junior's niece, said of Friday's celebration of life.  Seau was found dead at his beachfront home on May 2. Related: Junior Seau Death Being Investigated as Suicide Friday’s occasion was filled with joy, she said, adding that eulogies by friends and family were held together by a common theme — her uncle’s smile. Her father, Wilson, said the service was “positive and uplifting.” “It just made you want to get closer to God,” he said. The event featured island music. Various professional football players attended, including John Lynch, Ronnie Lott and Sean Salisbury. Another memorial took…

Qualcomm to Host Public Memorial Service for Junior Seau Friday

The service will begin at 6:30 p.m.

A heavy-hitting lineup of former Chargers football players tops the speakers' list for Friday's memorial service for Junior Seau at Qualcomm Stadium, the team announced Wednesday. Quarterback Dan Fouts, safety Rodney Harrison and running back LaDainian Tomlinson will speak at the "Celebration of Life" honoring Seau, the ex- linebacker who fatally shot himself in the chest one week ago today. Harrison, in particular, has spoken passionately about how the 43-year-old Oceanside native mentored him after he was drafted. Other scheduled speakers include Bobby Ross, the head coach of the lone Chargers team to go to the Super Bowl; former Tampa Bay and Denver standout safety John Lynch; and San Diego Mayor Jerry Sanders. The event begins at 6:30 …

PATCH POLL

Poll: Is the Season Over for the San Diego Padres—Last in NL West?

Only one team in Major League Baseball has a worse record than the local professional ballclub.

The San Diego Padres are on a roll—having won two games in a row.  Better yet, the 11-20 Friars are no longer the worst team in baseball. (Thank you, 8-21 Twins!)  But mired in last place in the National League West, the Padres are 8 1/2 games behind the division-leading Dodgers. (The horrors!) It could be worse. We could have paid $240 million for a player only to end up last, like the Angels.  The question remains: Is the season over for the Padres?  Or does hope remain for a May Miracle and pennant race?

I agree whole heartedly with this statement! I predicted only 60 wins for the season in a poll taken before the opener. We could maybe compete against the LL Pony league caliber right now. Come on Chargers August preseason.   more ›

Choosing Wellness: The Mindset for Success in the Sports World

A quick look at the key components to becoming "mentally tough." The Mindset for Success in the Sports World

I hear coaches and athletes talk a lot about being “mentally tough,” but what are the characteristics needed to be or become mentally tough? According to sport psychology author Ellis Cashmore, mental toughness qualities are described as the following: “Mental toughness describes a bundles of qualities that include an unusually high level of resolution, a refusal to be intimidated, and ability to stay focused in high-pressure situations, a capacity for retaining an optimum level of arousal through a competition...an unyielding attitude when being beaten, a propensity to take risks when rivals show caution and inflexibly, perhaps obstinate insistence on finishing a contest rather than conceding defeat.” Certainly athletes and coaches need …
