La Mesa operates three fire stations, and joined neighboring El Cajon and Lemon Grove in January 2010 to form aMore joint-powers agency called the Heartland Fire & Rescue Department. With Proposition D bond funds, La Mesa rebuilt  Fire Station 11 on Allison Avenue downtown in 2006. In March 2010, the city reopened an improved Fire Station 13 at 9110 Grossmont Blvd. on the city's eastern edge. A third firehouse, Fire Station 12, is at 8844 Dallas St. in the northern part of town.

Since 2004, every firefighter hired by La Mesa has been a certified paramedic. La Mesa also contracts with American Medical Response, or AMR, for emergency and non-emergency medical transport services.  La Mesa Fire Department works with the  Burn Institute of San Diego and its Juvenile Firesetter Program, which educates and counsels children about the dangers of playing with fire.

Station 11 is the city's busiest, responding to medical calls, structure fires, grass and brush blazes, vehicle fires and accidents, rescues and hazardous materials incidents.  It also does public service work Station 13 houses a fire engine owned by the California Emergency Management Agency (Cal EMA).
