With a reputation for sports and academic excellence — and graduates including Heisman Trophy winner Reggie…More Bush and NBA Hall of Famer Bill Walton — Helix continues to improve, thanks to Proposition H and U construction. This includes a new science building, theater and performing arts classrooms.
Chartered under the Grossmont Union High School District, Helix has grade principals overseen by an executive director, Rani Goyal, who started work in September 2010. The school offers advanced placement (AP) classes in physics, calculus, environmental science, psychology, U.S. and European history, government, English, Spanish, computer science and studio art.
Along with an active tutoring service, the school offer Club College to help students with college planning and admissions projects. The school also has an active chapter of Students Against Destructive Decisions. All students are required to do 40 hours of community service before they graduate, including 20 hours by the end of their sophomore year.
An award-winning pipe and drum corps performs with the equally decorated marching band. The Highland Players theater group has a history of fine productions.
