Heritage of the Americas Museum

This museum is on the Cuyamaca College campus and rivals larger natural history museums in San Diego County. EachMore room is filled with artifacts and educational information on the natural history, archaeology, anthropology and art of North, Central and South America. The museum depicts the history and way of life of the San Diego Kumeyaay Indians and displays metates, ollas, pots and bowls found in the region. There is a gift shop featuring  jewelry, books, arts and crafts from around the world at reasonable prices.

The museum hosts school field trips weekly and volunteer docents go out to the schools to provide educational programs.

Head Start

Alpha Kappa Alpha Head Start preschool has been serving Casa de Oro since 1995. Located in an adjacent lot behindMore Casa de Oro Elementary School, the facility helps prepare kids ages 3 to 5 for Kindergarten with developmentally appropriate curriculum.

Head Start accepts applications throughout the year, but has a capacity for 88 students. The center features a large playground area with a jungle gym, large sandboxes, slides and a seesaw. The children also participate in various games, arts and crafts to help enrich their lives.

Head Start also offers social services to help children and families, including job referrals, breakfast, lunch, snacks and clothing. It  partners with Casa do Oro Elementary to provide speech therapy for kids, and offers special courses for special education and disabled children. The director is Deborah Durham.

For more than 35 years, the Alpha Kappa Alpha Head Start pre-school has been preparing young kids for kindergartenMore through educational programs. It is a federally-funded program.

Director Valerie York brings years of experience to the center, and is proud to be able to help less privileged students, but also help their parents as well. The center offers parenting classes, parental workshops and even provides financial assistance for parents wishing to enroll in GED programs.
