The campaign encouraging drivers and passengers to buckle up begins on Monday and will last two weeks.
Seat belt laws have been on the books in California since 1986, yet there are still a few people that risk a ticket—or worse—by not buckling up. The odds of getting a seat belt ticket will go up next week, as the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department will be joining law-enforcement agencies across the state in a crackdown on violators. The Click it or Ticket campaign starts on Monday and will last until June 3, although deputies issue tickets all year. The cost of a first-time ticket starts at $142, according to the Sheriff’s Department. “Too many drivers and passengers on the road at night are not wearing their seat belts, and it all too often ends in tragedy,” Sheriff Bill Gore said in a statement. “Our goal is to save more lives, so …

Updated at 9 a.m. May 18, 2012 Six days before killing himself, Junior Seau was being represented in a downtown San Diego courtroom by an attorney fending off a personal-injury lawsuit. According to court documents, Murray Lea sought $256,000 from Seau as compensatory damages in connection with Seau’s 2010 SUV plunge off a Carlsbad cliff. Lea says he was close enough to the car he could have grabbed the door handle, but injured himself jumping away. He listed a San Marcos address in the lawsuit, but now says he is homeless—living out of a van on Coast Highway and fearing for his life as a result of publicity about the case. “I’m suing a dead legend for a quarter-million dollars,” Lea noted Thursday afternoon from his car in Carlsbad. But …

Ever wonder where our police officers get some of their equipment?
Ever wonder what happens to surplus military equipment once the Defense Department doesn't need it? According to California Watch, some of it ends up in San Diego County as well as thousands of other agencies nationwide. More than 17,000 local agencies in the United States take advantage of the Defense Department’s equipment giveaways, when they can snatch up items like M16 rifles, helicopters, microwaves, survival kits, workout equipment, bayonet knives, ammunition cans and more. While other local police agencies have stocked their equipment shelves, the La Mesa Police Department has not participated in the program since 2000, when it received a ground troops parachutist's helmet, valued at $2,977, according to the California Watch data…

Along with the bandana, the heavy male robber was wearing a gray coat and dark pants, police say.
A man in a red bandana but not showing any weapon robbed the 7-Eleven store on Palm Avenue early Sunday, La Mesa police report. The same outlet was robbed twice in 24 hours in early February and also last October. Sgt. The man left the business on foot, going north toward Echo Drive.” The robber may have entered a car that drove away east on Echo or he left on foot. “The clerk activated a silent robbery alarm at the start of the robbery, but the suspect…
