Robert Sandlin Dies at 85; Was Grossmont Alum and Audiologist

Sandlin also served aboard the USS Eldorado during World War II.

Robert Eugene Sandlin—who graduated Grossmont High School, before becoming an audiologist—died May 4, according to a U-T San Diego obituary. He was 85. "After graduating from Grossmont High School in 1944 he served in World War II aboard the USS Eldorado. He later earned a B.A. from SDSU, and a Ph.D. from Wayne State University (with a few years in between spent in Europe working for the State Department and generally bumming about). His distinguished career in audiology spanned a period of over 50 years, during which he lectured and published extensively, both nationally and internationally," the obituary said. A celebration of life is planned for 5:30 p.m., May 18th at Marina Village, the Baja Room, 1936 Quivira Way, in San Diego.

2000 Gather for Private Seau Ceremony [Gallery]

A private celebration for the fallen former NFL star brought friends and family to Calvary Chapel in Oceanside Friday.

Some 2,000 friends and family of Junior Seau gathered at Calvary Chapel in Oceanside to say farewell to the NFL legend. “It was beautiful,” Lauren Godinet, Junior's niece, said of Friday's celebration of life.  Seau was found dead at his beachfront home on May 2. Up to 60,000 Expected at Public Seau Memorial

A private service will be held in Oceanside.

A private church service is planned Thursday for the family of the late former San Diego Chargers linebacker Junior Seau, while a public "Celebration of Life" tribute is set for Friday. Supporters of the family have said the private service would take place at a church in Oceanside, but the location was not being reported because the mourners are seeking privacy. Friday's event for the hometown hero, who graduated from Oceanside High School, is scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m. at Qualcomm Stadium. Admission and parking will be free and on a first-come, first-served basis. According to U-T San Diego, anywhere from 30,000 to 60,000 people are expected to attend the event, which is being paid for by the Chargers. It should last about 90 …

He was also a member of the College Avenue Baptist Church.

Jerry Victor Williams—a Mt. Miguel High School graduate—died May 1, according to a U-T San Diego obituary. He was 73. He grew up in Spring Valley and served at Fort Ord, according to the newspaper. He was also a member of the College Avenue Baptist Church. Details for a celebration of life have not yet been released.

Hugh Elvin Laird—Veteran—Dies at 82

He was a member of the American Legion Post #282 of La Mesa.

Hugh Elvin Laird—an East County resident—died April 29, according to a U-T San Diego obituary. He was 82. He served in the U.S. Navy, worked for General Dynamics and Solar Tubines and was an officer of the American Legion Post #282 of La Mesa, according to the newspaper. He died at the Lemon Grove Care & Rehabilitation, according to the newspaper. A memorial service will be held May 9 at Greenwood Salli Lynn Chapel.

No Drugs or Alcohol Involved in Popular Surgeon’s Feb. 23 Motorcycle Death

Investigative report says Sharp Grossmont's Jeff Marxen was victim of “nonsurvivable” mishap.

Popular local doctor Jeffrey Marxen had no drugs or alcohol in his system when he died in a Feb. 23 motorcycle crash shortly after playing softball, according to authorities. A 5,000-word investigative report signed by Chief Medical Examiner Glenn Wagner concluded that the Black Mountain Road accident was a “nonsurvivable motorcycle mishap.” But the report, made public Tuesday, added details to what is known of the tragedy involving the well-known orthopedic surgeon at Sharp Grossmont Hospital in La Mesa. “There had been no witnesses to the accident and there did not appear to be any other vehicles involved in the incident,” the report said. An impromptu memorial attracted dozens of fans and friends of Junior Seau to his Oceanside home Thursday evening. The former NFL player was found dead at his Oceanside home Wednesday morning. The coroner's report confirmed the death was a suicide.

Vigil Planned Thursday Evening for Seau

Former NFL star Junior Seau died Wednesday in his Oceanside home.

A prayer vigil is planned for fallen NFL star Junior Seau on Thursday evening at his home, the North County Times reports. The house is on The Strand south of the Oceanside Pier. His family is also planning a memorial service.  Seau died Wednesday morning at his home. Police are investigating the shooting death as a suicide.  Read more on the North County Times.

La Mesans shed tears and brought flowers to the Junior Seau Sports Complex as they paid tribute to the San Diego Chargers great who died of an apparent suicide Wednesday morning in Oceanside. “He gave his heart to San Diego,” said La Mesan Alan McCornack. “Everybody in San Diego is going to miss him." “San Diego loves Junior Seau,” said McCornack, who attended Parkway Middle School and Grossmont High School. “I don’t know what happened, but it’s a big loss.” McCornack placed home-grown roses at the sports complex sign at Parkway Middle School. “It’s hard to talk about it,” he said with tears in his eyes. “It’s still so fresh.” The sports complex—which includes La Mesita Park, the John A.
