Lois Jane Smith died May 11, according to a U-T San Diego obituary. She was 89. She served in the U.S. Coast Guard and was a volunteer with the Grossmont Hospital Auxiliary. She lived in La Mesa for more than 50 years, according to the newspaper. Her ashes will be placed at the Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery.
She was a member of the La Mesa First Church.
Ila Pinegar died May 13, according to a U-T San Diego obituary. She was 81. She moved to the San Diego area in 1953 and was a member of the La Mesa First Church, according to the newspaper. A celebration of life is planned for 1 p.m. Saturday, May 26 at the Calvary Temple in San Diego.
She also taught at SDSU.
Janice Leigh Minor died May 12, according to a U-T San Diego obituary. She was 60. She graduated from Mount Miguel High School in 1969, and attended Grossmont College and San Diego State University. She worked in the art department at SDSU, was a member of the La Mesa Soroptomist Club and played in soccer, according to the newspaper. A memorial service has not yet been announced.
She lived in La Mesa for more than 50 years.
Ann Hunt died May 4, according to a U-T San Diego obituary. She was 85. Hunt, who lived in La Mesa for more than 50 years, was a member of the Fletcher Hills Presbyterian Church, according to the newspaper.

Robert Eugene Sandlin—who graduated Grossmont High School, before becoming an audiologist—died May 4, according to a U-T San Diego obituary. He was 85. "After graduating from Grossmont High School in 1944 he served in World War II aboard the USS Eldorado. He later earned a B.A. from SDSU, and a Ph.D. from Wayne State University (with a few years in between spent in Europe working for the State Department and generally bumming about). His distinguished career in audiology spanned a period of over 50 years, during which he lectured and published extensively, both nationally and internationally," the obituary said. A celebration of life is planned for 5:30 p.m., May 18th at Marina Village, the Baja Room, 1936 Quivira Way, in San Diego.

A private celebration for the fallen former NFL star brought friends and family to Calvary Chapel in Oceanside Friday.
Some 2,000 friends and family of Junior Seau gathered at Calvary Chapel in Oceanside to say farewell to the NFL legend. “It was beautiful,” Lauren Godinet, Junior's niece, said of Friday's celebration of life. Seau was found dead at his beachfront home on May 2. A private church service is planned Thursday for the family of the late former San Diego Chargers linebacker Junior Seau, while a public "Celebration of Life" tribute is set for Friday. Supporters of the family have said the private service would take place at a church in Oceanside, but the location was not being reported because the mourners are seeking privacy. Friday's event for the hometown hero, who graduated from Oceanside High School, is scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m. at Qualcomm Stadium. Admission and parking will be free and on a first-come, first-served basis. According to U-T San Diego, anywhere from 30,000 to 60,000 people are expected to attend the event, which is being paid for by the Chargers. It should last about 90 …

Jerry Victor Williams—a Mt. Miguel High School graduate—died May 1, according to a U-T San Diego obituary. He was 73. He grew up in Spring Valley and served at Fort Ord, according to the newspaper. Hugh Elvin Laird—an East County resident—died April 29, according to a U-T San Diego obituary. He was 82. He served in the U.S. Navy, worked for General Dynamics and Solar Tubines and was an officer of the American Legion Post #282 of La Mesa, according to the newspaper. He died at the Lemon Grove Care & Rehabilitation, according to the newspaper. A memorial service will be held May 9 at Greenwood Salli Lynn Chapel.

Investigative report says Sharp Grossmont's Jeff Marxen was victim of “nonsurvivable” mishap.
Popular local doctor Jeffrey Marxen had no drugs or alcohol in his system when he died in a Feb. 23 motorcycle crash shortly after playing softball, according to authorities. A 5,000-word investigative report signed by Chief Medical Examiner Glenn Wagner concluded that the Black Mountain Road accident was a “nonsurvivable motorcycle mishap.” But the report, made public Tuesday, added details to what is known of the tragedy involving the well-known orthopedic surgeon at Sharp Grossmont Hospital in La Mesa. “There had been no witnesses to the accident and there did not appear to be any other vehicles involved in the incident,” the report said.
