Your article said there were only 4 "media arts" classes at Grossmont, but the GrossmontRead More Art Department offers much much more: GHS Visual Arts program includes Art 1-8 meaning students may take up to 4 years of Art, 3D Art- Ceramics & Jewelry, Photography- beginning and advanced levels, Digital Arts, and Advanced Placement Art and Honors level Photography and Digital Arts. Students may receive articulated college credit for Photography and Digital Arts as well. The quality of these classes as well as those in Performing Arts earned Grossmont the state recognition. And you said that the Performing Arts building would be completed in 2013...where did you get THAT from! It won't even be started until 2015.

"On Monday, attorneys William and Dan Shinoff argued that their 'inadvertent mistake ofRead More calendaring the wrong date that the opposition was due' led to the filing of a late document to the court and Lewis receiving the document without sufficient time to reply." Yeah, very "inadvertent." I am puzzled as to why a public group, a 501(C)3 is not required to open their books. This is disturbing.

If we took away ex-Helix drop out numbers from Monte Vista and Grossmont drop-out numbers, wouldRead More Monte Vista and Grossmont rank as well as Valhalla? Remember, Valhalla is the academic leader in the district, so what does that say about Valhalla's number of drop-outs?
Mt. Helix Resident April 12, 2013 at 05:07 am
As with any collection of data, these numbers tell only a part of what is going on in our corner ofRead More the school district. Little does the community know, since going charter, Helix's "opting" out practice has negatively impacted Mount Miguel, Monte Vista, and Grossmont. I have worked at two of these three schools in the last seven years, and I have seen firsthand how Helix would rather ask their at-risk youth to kindly leave instead of providing costly resources to ensure their graduation. "Opting out" usually is applied when a child has academic and/or behavior problems. The student and their family are asked to meet with school officials who say the following: "we don't think this is the right fit for your child", "we believe other schools might be able to provide better services", and "we feel your child might be more successful at another school." We know this because dozens of ex-Helix families have enrolled in our local schools all saying the same thing. Helix shamefully pushes their at-risk youth out the door; they shamefully force local schools to pick up the pieces; then they shamefully reap the benefits of articles like this that tell only half the story and save a whole lot of money by not providing costly resources for at-risk youth. Helix thinks they can pick and choose their students, but they are still a public school and must provide an education for all, not just those kids with high test scores.

Hi Tony. Apologies. It was a simple omission of human error. I was copy/pasting each name into theRead More tables individually and accidentally skipped over Anthony. I've corrected the mistake, but with so many kids, I hope there are not more. Readers, please let me know if I left off anyone and I'll correct it. Thanks for reading, Tony, and congrats to all the kids. You'll be our bosses one day.

Holy cow Jacquelyn Espineli and Parker Brown! WOW!!! I wish there were more stories about theRead More academic kids. The good news is, when all the high school glory is over - you will be the ones (all the academic kids who work hard and have focus) who are very successful! Proud of you all!
