Around '67 or '68, to help my mother pay for my private school tuition, I worked, after school and…Read More on weekends, at a Mexican food stand on "Olvera Street" in Los Angeles's historic district. One evening, as I was bent over the "comal", a deep voice asked for "two tacos". My mind found a familiarity in this tall man's distinct voice as he stood in front of me with his dark hair and sunglasses. He said "tacos" as "taycos" with a long A and abit of a twang. Growing up in the barrios of Bunkerhill and Echo Park, I escaped into movies and tv...Westerns were a fav. It usually annoyed me when "tostadas" were ordered as "tostados" but the word "taycos" with a twang seemed oddly appropriate coming from this man. To this day, even though I had encountered many celebrities while living in proximity to Hollywood, I have always been honored to have sold Mr. Dale Robertson those two "taycos". RIP.

I would tell him that he worried me, that what if he died, and he would always say the same thing to me, "We all die someday but I can't live in fear of that, I am going to do what I love to do". I consider myself lucky to have known him, we had some great times and experiences together, he was a cherished friend and I think of him often. Shane, I miss you buddy.

Deciding to cross over from Skydiving to BASE is not a decision made lightly. We chose to do it knowing full well the risks. Shane was no different. It's a shame that the BASE world has lost some one so inspiring to us, but we well never forget his contribution to the sport, and the fact that he was one of the few who decided, despite the risks, to go for it, to dive head long into the richest part of life, living.
