Tom Y:
The Real IRS Scandal according to investigative reporter, Lee Fang, has been the blatant…Read More abuse of 501(c)(4) status by dozens of lobbyists and operatives who have set up such tax-exempt organizations as political slush funds to conceal money in political campaigns.
The real tax abusers are those groups who formed 501(c)(4) political organizations and have operated more like Super PACs-"raising and spending tens of millions in corporate funds—without disclosing a dime of their contributors. IRS rules state that the primary activity of such groups cannot relate to political advocacy, yet examples abound of 501(c)(4) groups spending well over 50 percent of their funds on attack ads, political action committees and other clearly political expenses. These potential violations of the law have gone on for several years now, with very little interest from the Beltway media or Capitol Hill Republicans, many of whom
owe their election to spending by bogus 501(c)(4) organizations.

FYI: Political Activities of a 501(c)(4):
IRS regulations allow a 501(c)(4) nonprofit organization to engage in some political and legislative activities. It may lobby for legislation essential to its social welfare mission. Its political activities cannot be its primary function, however, and the organization cannot advocate for or against a specific candidate. Expenditures that a (c)(4) organization makes on its political activities may be subject to taxation.
The above mentioned groups could be subject to gift tax liability. Unfortunately, the law is not clear.
"In May 2011, the IRS confirmed that it was examining donations to one or more 501(c)4 organizations to determine whether the donors should have paid federal gift tax on the donations. Many tax advisers were caught off guard by the IRSʼs 2011 investigation, and Members of Congress and attorneys for the anonymous donors subsequently wrote letters to the Treasury Department, demanding that the audits be terminated and that the IRS immediately issue clarifying guidance on the application of federal gift tax rules to 501(c)4 donations."

The IRS was doing it's job by examining carefully the multitude of 501(c)(4) applicants before the last election. The problem arose when the groups were not approved immediately, though most were eventually.

Who needs cable or satellite? Over-the-air digital TV is a whole new world, and it's free! With a…Read More $50 converter and $50 to $100 for a roof antenna and lead in cable you can watch all the local over-the-air digital channels. And unless you are in a deep canyon you can also get dozens of Los Angeles digital stations.

Taking my cue from TWC's refusal to show the SDSU games on the MWC channel, I left them last year…Read More after 20+ years with them and SWC. I switched to DirectTV and couldn't be happier. I not only get my Padres, but also much more content than TWC offers. The FSSD Padre games are so much better than the Channel 4 games of years past--better production, better pre-game and post-game shows, etc. TWC loyalists are missing some good programming, and (sometimes) some good baseball.

Good collar by the PD and good riddance. But I doubt these three will ever make restitution for the…Read More damage they did.
I remember back in the 1970s when a group of three teenage boys went around La Mesa shooting out windows with a pellet gun. By the time they were caught they had done at least $50,000 worth of damage. In those days that was enough money to buy a house.
