Grandmother’s Care Inspires Girl, 13, to Raise Funds for Grossmont Hospital

Gisselle Hernandez of High Tech Middle School in Chula Vista raised $370 for cancer patients.

Breast cancer patients at Sharp Grossmont Hospital will get wigs, skin care products and other niceties, thanks to fundraising efforts by a 13-year-old South Bay girl.

Gisselle Hernandez, who attends High Tech Middle School, a charter school in Chula Vista, delivered a $370 check to the hospital’s cancer center Nov. 11, according to hospital spokeswoman Stacy Kadrich.

“Inspired by the care her grandmother received from the center’s staff, Gisselle organized a car wash to raise money for other breast cancer patients receiving treatment,” Kadrich said Monday.

Registered nurse Donna Thompson, the hospital’s Breast Health Navigator, accepted the check on behalf of the La Mesa hospital’s cancer center.

Thompson provides guidance, support and advocacy for newly diagnosed patients, like Gisselle’s grandmother, which continues throughout the duration of their breast cancer treatment.
