Food 4 Less Grant Will Help Women Afford Breast Cancer Treatment

With latest donation, the grocery company has donated $30,000 to Sharp Grossmont Hospital.

For the third straight year, warehouse grocer Food 4 Less has donated $10,000 to Sharp Grossmont Hospital to benefit patients with breast cancer.

The money will support the hospital’s Breast Health Navigator Program, which provides advocacy, support and guidance for patients recently diagnosed with breast cancer, the hospital said.

“Food 4 Less’s most recent donation benefits Sharp Grossmont’s Vital Spirit Fund, which ensures breast cancer treatment for uninsured and underinsured women,” said Stacy P. Kadrich, a hospital spokeswoman.

Hospital staff members Donna Thompson, a registered nurse and breast health navigator,  and Denise McBurney, manager of patient access services, work together to identify patients in need, Kadrich said.

“Breast cancer is one of the five top most expensive medical conditions,” Thompson says. “Grant funding provided generously by Food 4 Less will help eliminate financial barriers for breast cancer patients.  The Vital Spirit Fund is available for these women and will provide the monetary assistance they need.”

Food 4 Less, based in Los Angeles and a subsidiary of The Kroger Co., operates 146 supermarkets under the banners Food 4 Less in Southern California, Nevada, Illinois and Indiana, and Foods Co in Northern California.

Food 4 Less operates in Lemon Grove, but a sister store under the Kroger brand—Ralphs—has an outlet on Grossmont Boulevard.

Last year, Food 4 Less contributed more than $4 million to support education, hunger relief, women’s health and local nonprofit organizations in the communities served by the company’s stores, the hospital said.
