Crosspointe Life Church Hoping to Inspire the Spirit of Creativity

Free conference June 10-12 is meant to awaken the artist within everyone.

Dwell Redeemed Arts Conference might sound like something for artists. But the event, set for June 10-12 at Crosspointe Life Church, is designed for everyone.

“We’re talking about accessing creativity,” said Britt Midgette, director of creative arts for the church at 8809 La Mesa Blvd. “God created us in the Spirit to be creative, not about rules and limits. We want to talk about that in context of whatever people are doing, at work, throughout the day in their relational circles, tapping into the creativity of heaven to bless the world.”

The fifth annual conference is free. Detailed information is available at the event website.

Midgette, who is resigning his Crosspointe Life position to focus on his business and music, raves about Charles Jones. The prolific composer and keyboardist, who has collaborated and toured with Joss Stone and others, will perform at the event and deliver the defining message.

“We’re bringing him in to talk,” Midgette said. “He’s someone who’s doing it on a high level.”

FROM VOLUNTEER TO EXPERT: A few years ago, Mary Domb Mikkelson volunteered to do a column for the church newsletter, which led to her helping with the whole newsletter, which led to her becoming the person in charge of the newsletter. And then she becme one of the founders and editorialists of the denomination’s online conference newsletter.

Be careful what you volunteer for.

Mikkelson enjoys her news media role with . And her efforts with the local church have been so effective that Saturday she taught a workshop at the annual gathering of the Southern California Nevada Conference of the UCC.

The workshop—“From Pew Sitter to PR Person: Promoting Your Church – In-House and to the World”—was co-led by La Mesa church interim pastor Rev. Dr. Bill Peterson.

“I’m a little terrified but looking forward to it,” Mikkelson said before the presentation. “The important thing is convincing people you don’t have to be a pro to do a good job for your church. I found I can do it and keep finding new ways to do it. Why not help? Because most churches can’t afford a publicist, and it ends up falling onto the pastor or the secretary. And it’s more fun when you’re doing it.”
