Pageant director Alex Kuty says five young women attended orientation Sunday to become contestants in the Miss La Mesa event and nine girls are entered for Miss Teen La Mesa of 2012. But she says Feb. 12 is the last day for contestants to apply. “We have former Miss La Mesas from over five decades RSVP'd to attend this year pageant in honor of the centennial,” she said Monday. When Miss La Mesa and Miss Teen La Mesa are crowned March 2, they’ll have an extra sash denoting the city’s centennial of cityhood.

In announcing the 2012 event, pageant director Alexandra Kuty said Sunday that “we are looking for young women who want an opportunity to be leaders in their community.  The busiest girls make the best titleholders, so girls who are involved in all sorts of activities are perfect.”

Pageant organizers are seeking outgoing women ages 13-26 to take part in the 2012 Miss La Mesa and Miss Santee Pageants.

“We love seeing a diverse group of ladies with all sorts of backgrounds,” Kuty says.

Kuty also announced the return of the Miss Rancho Jamul pageant, which has not been held for the past three years.

“We are so excited to bring back the title of Miss Rancho Jamul and continue to give young women in East County opportunities for scholarship and community service.”

Miss Rancho Jamul will be held March 31 at Steele Canyon High School.

The Miss La Mesa pageants are sponsored by Grossmont Center and the local Chamber of Commerce.  There is no swimsuit competition.

Miss La Mesa and Miss Santee 2012 each receive a $1,000 scholarship while Miss La Mesa Teen and Miss Santee Teen 2012 each get a $500 scholarship.  Scholarship money was fundraised in August in the  “Fashion Rocks the East” fashion show at the La Mesa Community Center.

An extra $1,000 will be dedicated for essay award winners, thanks to donations from chamber leader Mary England and Sportsplex USA.

“It’s important to recognize the contestants in several areas, including essay writing, to show our commitment to education and being well-rounded women,” Kuty said.

Entrants will be scored on personal interview, speech, poise and personality, sportswear, evening gown and an on-stage question.  Pageant photographers will present the Miss Photogenic award, and contestants will vote for the Miss Congeniality award.

Winners serve as their cities’ official hostess and spend the year attending grand openings, parades, summer concerts and chamber functions.
