Avoid an Audit: Free Tax Help Available at Casa de Oro Library

For individuals and families with incomes less than $49,000, tax experts will be available on Saturdays through April.

While it’s not even March yet, the deadline to file income tax returns is on a lot of people’s minds. With April 15 falling on a Sunday this year, we have two more days to finish the task that many of us dread.

For individuals and families that earn less than $49,000 a year, free tax help will be available over four consecutive Saturdays at the . Beginning March 24 and ending April 14, experts will be on hand from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. to answer questions and navigate the complex process.

Reservations are recommended and can be made by emailing VITA@housingcollaborative.org, but walk-ins will also be accepted. Required documents include proof of identification; Social Security cards and birth dates for themselves, spouses and dependents; financial statements, including wage, earning, income and dividend statements; bank routing and account numbers; daycare-provider information; and anything else that would help the tax preparer.

Both spouses must be present to sign document if filing a joint return.

“Having VITA tax assistance offered at the library is just one way we’re devoted to serving the needs of our community,” said county Library Director José Aponte in a statement. “Paying for tax assistance is one of many costs that are difficult to cover in the current economy. The County Library is here to help.”
