Helix Student Bikes From Canada to Mexico in 22 Days

A local teenager spends time between junior and senior year bicycling 1750 miles down the coast.

Helix High School student Andrew Johnson, 16, spent most of June completing an epic trip, riding his bicycle along the coast from Canada to Mexico.

Andrew described the 1750-mile journey as "the ride of a lifetime." Over 22 days he averaged 80 miles a day carrying camping gear, clothes, and cooking supplies.

The day after his junior year at Helix ended his mother drove him up to Canada and dropped him off. He arrived back in La Mesa on June 28, after a short jaunt to Tijuana.

"He wants to do this trip because he wants to accomplish something that signifies his independence as well as something that he can look back on and feel proud of," Andrew's father wrote on the website where he kept track of the trip by posting photos, video and a rundown of the route down California.
