Photos: Local Legend Bill Walton Competes in Triathlon for a Cause

More than 200 of the world's top physically challenged athletes and 550 able-bodied athletes participated in the 18th Annual San Diego Triathlon Challenge in La Jolla on Sunday.

The San Diego Triathlon Challenge was held Sunday in La Jolla. The tri is unique because celebrities, sports legends, challenged athletes and able-bodied athletes compete side by side to raise funding for the Challenged Atheletes Foundation.

Participants included , basketball Hall of Famer; Jim Ryun, a three-time Olympic competitor and former member of Congress; Sarah Reinertsen, first female above-knee amputee to finish the Ironman World Championship; and Anthony Smith, a retired Army major who lost an arm and his hip while serving in Iraq in 2004.

“This is a day that inspires like no other,” said Walton. “It is the ultimate illustration of the power of the human spirit to overcome any obstacle.”

This annual event raises more than $1 million each year for the Challenged Athletes Foundation. The Foundation's mission is to provide people with physical disabilities the funding and support to participate in sports and fitness activities including swimming, biking and running.
