Sabo's Pitching Gem Not Enough, Monte Vista Ousted from Baseball Playoffs

Monarchs fall 1-0 in eighth after Nick Sabo blanks Cathedral on two hits over the first seven innings. They finished the season 22-11.

Monte Vista High senior southpaw Nick Sabo blanked host Cathedral Catholic on two hits over the first seven innings of Tuesday’s San Diego CIF Division III semifinal at the Dons' field.

Despite that overpowering performance, Sabo and the Monarchs were fit to be tied--as in scoreless tie. An inning later they were on their way home, 1-0 losers to the Dons (29-4), who will meet El Capitan for the SDCIF Division III championship Saturday at Tony Gwynn Stadium.

In the bottom of the eighth, Cathedral’s Matt Boermeester ripped a one-out double into the gap, scoring Nick Fornaca with the only run of the game. The Long Beach State-bound Sabo was tagged with his fifth loss in 11 decisions.

Sabo and Justin Aquinigoc collected two hits apiece for Monte Vista, which finished the season 22-11.

The fourth-seeded Monarchs lost their first playoff game to Ramona 4-3 before beating Santana 5-1 and Ramona in a rematch, 8-6. A win Tuesday would have set up another game with top-seeded Cathedral, which is unbeaten in the playoffs, on Thursday.
