Megan Long Stepping Down as Girls Basketball Coach at Grossmont

Medical issues led to decision, she says. But she says she hopes to return in a year or two—while continuing to teach social studies.

Megan Long, a social studies teacher at Grossmont High School, has stepped down as girls basketball coach after three seasons and a runner-up finish this past season in Grossmont Hills League.

EastCountySports.com on Tuesday quoted Long, who had a record of 49-34, as saying: “I’d like to continue. But I have been diagnosed with an acid-reflux condition.”

Doctors told her that “if I yell at the current rate I do, I will lose my voice,” the website quoted Long as saying.

On Thursday, Long said she appreciated the interest in her coaching halt, but “I would rather not share the details of my medical problems.”

She called it a tough decision.

“I decided to resign in mid-April and made it official on the 23rd, I think,” she said.

Long, 29, would like to return to coaching, saying: “I am hoping this is temporary, hopefully a year or two-year break at the most. I would rather step away now than create further damage to my situation.”

Grossmont High School Principal Theresa Kemper said she was saddened to hear the news.

“I am sorry to lose Megan as the girls basketball coach,” Kemper said. “She was great for the program, and the girls really looked up to her. Megan was an excellent role model for the girls, provided good leadership, and helped the team play well.”

In her sixth year of teaching, Long will continue to teach social science classes—including world history—“and be a leader at GHS,” Kemper said.

Long said her players have been supportive “and so have been the parents. They weren’t completely happy and it caught them off-guard, but they are good kids
and will stay loyal to the program and continue on. I’m at the school, so I am still around.”

Meanwhile, Grossmont athletic director Frank Foggiano told EastCountySports.com that he is looking for a successor. He can be contacted at ffoggiano@yahoo.com.
