Lake Murray Little League Flies Old Glory at Half-Staff for Al Silva

League board member, who died recently after a battle with cancer, was known for fundraising prowess. County and city saluted for $25,000 in donations.

The 2010 season flag of Lake Murray Little League was carefully folded and presented in a frame box Saturday morning to Joe Silva of La Mesa. His father, Al, had been a fundraising star as a league board member before passing away recently after a battle with cancer. The American flag overlooking center field at Sunset Park flew at half-staff Saturday, where hundreds of youngsters and parents gathered for a delayed Opening Day. (The previous Saturday was rained out.) League president Chuck Cadwalader called the Silva moment the highlight of the day, which also included appearances by county Supervisor Dianne Jacob and Councilman Ernie Ewin. The county pitched in $20,000 and the city $5,000 for new bleachers and other improvements at the Sunset Park facilities and the Murray Manor Elementary School ballfields.
