Helix Baseball Coach Wants to Achieve Success with 'Small Ball'

Once a Scotties baseball player himself, Cole Holland is in his 12th year as skipper.

Admitting that his young team has been "a pretty selfish baseball team," at the outset of the season, Helix Charter High School head coach Cole Holland wants more for his squad.

"The biggest thing is to get kids to buy into something they've never had to do before," Hollad told Patch. "Most of these guys were the best Little Leaguers, the best Pony Leaguers, and they've never been asked to bunt or hit behind someone. So we really try to teach the situational things and some of the more teaching aspects of the game."

This year, the results have been mixed. After finishing 21-11 last season and second place in the Grossmont Hills League, the Scotties have begun the 2013 season 4-7.

However, Holland, a former Helix and Grossmont College baseball player, who also teaches P.E. at the school and who returned to coach his alma mater in 2002, says he's confident and hopeful his team will turn things around.
