Grossmont's Anthony Lawrence, Helix's Kendall Keys Lead Hall Honorees

Media, coaches and other advisers to Balboa Park museum picked the cream of the crop.

Grossmont quarterback Anthony Lawrence and Helix Charter High School wide receiver Kendall Keys highlighted a group of seven local high school athletes honored by the San Diego Hall of Champions for fall sports on Tuesday.

Lawrence, a junior, was named to the first team as quarterback. Keys was named to the first team as a wide receiver. He was joined on the first team for football by teammates Amu Milo, a defensive lineman.

Scotties honored on the second team were linebacker Rocky Fuga, running back Michael Adkins and defensive back Jalen Davis.

Only one other athlete from a local school was honored on a team, Monte Vista's Steven Lepe, a cross country runner.

Just as last year’s prep football Players of the Year were from champion Helix, the 2012 honorees by the San Diego Hall of Champions were both from Oceanside High School, who won this year.

The Hall of Champions announced top athletes in eight fall sports, including more than 100 from schools in San Diego County’s Patch communities.

La Costa Canyon High of Carlsbad claimed two runners of the year: Steven Fahy in boys cross country and Emma Abrahamson in girls.

“Quarterback Tofi Paopao and linebacker William Gulley of the San Diego Section Division II football champion Oceanside Pirates were selected the offensive and defensive Players of the Year by a select panel through the auspices of the San Diego Hall of Champions,” said the Hall of Champions.

“All of the first- and second-team selections will receive their Breitbard certificates at the All-CIF Awards Night Monday, Jan. 14, starting at 7 p.m. The event will be held at the San Diego Hall of Champions” in Balboa Park.

The hall noted that Paopao and Gulley led the Pirates to a 12-1 record, and Oceanside won the CIF Division II title by beating Poway 32-10. The Pirates placed seven players on the first and second teams.

In addition, the panel of media, coaches and advisers chose Coaches of the Year, including Brett Ormsby, Cathedral Catholic boys water polo; Chris Drake, Torrey Pines girls golf; Katie Culley, Carlsbad boys cross country; and Dan Geiger, Cathedral Catholic girls cross country.

Other Players of the Year were Torrey Pines’ Reily Buechler in volleyball, Vista’s Ryder Roberts in boys water polo, Scripps Ranch’s Sydney Earle in field hockey and Torrey Pines’ Sandy Choi in golf.
