Grossmont High’s Musgrove Signs with American League’s Toronto Blue Jays

The fire-balling right-hander will report to Toronto's Gulf Coast League affiliate to begin his pro career.

Former Grossmont High School right-hander Joe Musgrove signed a contract Thursday with the Toronto Blue Jays.  Musgrove was the 46th overall pick in the draft earlier this month, and is the Blue Jays' highest selection to have signed.

Toronto also signed 33rd-round pick Kramer Champlin,  a right-handed pitcher out of Arizona State, and has now inked 18 of their 55 picks, but Musgrove is the only one of the top 22 selections to agree to a deal thus far.

The 6-5, 230-pound hurler had a 7-5 record this season with a 2.40 ERA and 99 strikeouts in 78 2/3 innings as the Hillers advanced to the CIF title game.

Musgrove has been assigned to the Blue Jays' affiliate in the Gulf Coast League, which recently started its season. He had accepted a scholarship offer to play for San Diego State, but after being picked on the first day of the draft, opted to play professionally.

Musgrove said at Grossmont High School graduation June 16 that he had received a $500,000 signing bonus.
