Ramona High’s running game left coaches and fans stunned as Grossmont’s winning streak ground to a halt Friday night in a 52-22 defeat.
Turnovers, penalties and the inability to stop Bulldog runners hampered the No. 6 Foothillers in their first home game of the season. Grossmont had won its first two games 52-27 and 56-23.
“We just played poorly in every phase of the game,” said Grossmont coach Tom Karlo. “I’ve got to figure out how to motivate these kids to play better.”
Senior receiver J.T. Barnes caught two touchdowns Friday, Hunter Reiner made one and Christian Brooks scored a two-point conversion.
Grossmont scored its first touchdown with 8:53 to go in the first half. The Hillers scored a second touchdown in the first half, but trailed 32-14 at halftime and 46-14 after three quarters.
The Foothillers scored their third touchdown and two-point conversion in the fourth quarter.
Grossmont has a bye week and then hosts Otay Ranch of Chula Vista at 7 p.m. Sept. 27.
