I attended both the La Mesa Octoberfest and the El Cajon Octoberfest and our La Mesa Octoberfest was much better as it involved the whole community, not just the German American Club and friends. Driving to the El Cajon celebration, I passed a dead downtown to end up on at a location not close to any El Cajon merchants and it was a small, overcrowded event that we had to pay to get into. We walked around, didn't see anything of interest, didn't want to stand in long lines to buy a ticket to be able to stand in another line to trade it for food, so we left. Today, in La Mesa, we enjoyed the entire day, talked to lots of local merchants and exhibitors and had a great time. Perhaps it wasn't as "pure" as the El Cajon celebration, but in a multicultural world, "purity" may be overrated. We started the day with a delicious brunch at Mario's de la Mesa and the day was perfect from that moment forward. I really appreciate the inclusiveness of the La Mesa Village Merchant Association and all of their planning and execution of the fun day to celebrate the German Heritage and include as many others who wished to participate WTHOUT an entrance fee.
