CIF Baseball: Monte Vista Knocks Out Santana, 5-1

The Monarchs, who face Ramona Saturday, continue their mastery over the Sultans behind Luis Lebron's pitching.

The Monte Vista baseball team is probably sad that it won’t see the Santana Sultans any more this season. The Monarchs have cut down the Sultans 12-1, 6-2, 8-4 and 5-1.

The first three meetings came in Grossmont Valley League play. The latter, which took place on Friday at Monte Vista, was a San Diego CIF Division III playoff elimination game.

Luis Lebron, who started the game as the Monarchs’ first baseman, found himself on the mound after starter Paul O’Connor surrendered a single to Zach Breidt and three walks without getting out in the top of the first inning.

After that it was all about the pitching of Lebron, who blanked the Sultans on three hits over the final seven innings. Reilly Diaz gave Monte Vista (21-10) a 2-1 lead with an RBI single in the fourth inning.

Cameron Balough’s bases-loaded walk supplied the lone score for Santana, which finished the season 11-19-1.
