Boys Volleyball Playoffs: Grossmont Falls to Poway

The Foothillers' promising season ends at 23-6 with a three-set loss to the third-seeded Titans.

A very succesful season came to a disappointing end Friday night when the Grossmont High boys volleyball team lost in the CIF San Diego Section quarterfinals to third-seeded Poway in three sets, 25-18, 25-21, 25-12.

The host Titans (20-14) advance to the semifinals, where they will face second seeded Otay Ranch (28-7). Grossmont's season concludes with a 23-6 record, including 9-1 in league play.

Alec Tollgaard led the Foothillers with nearly seven kills per game, with Darren Klein adding more than three each game. Tollgaard also led the team in service aces.

Klein and Adam Melcher anchored the front line, leading the team in blocks, while Evan Selander was tops in digs and Ian Miller the leader in assists.

No. 1 seed Carlsbad defeated San Pasqual 3-0 (25-11, 25-19, 25-16)

No. 2 seed Otay Ranch defeated Mission Hills 3-0 (25-17, 25-18, 25-20)

No. 3 Poway defeated Grossmont 3-0 (25-18, 25-21, 25-12)

No. 4 Torrey Pines defeated Rancho Bernardo 3-2 (25-21, 23-25, 21-25, 25-15, 15-12)

Torrey Pines (4) at Carlsbad (1), 7 p.m.

Poway (3) at Otay Ranch (2), 7 p.m.

No. 3 La Jolla defeated Olympian 3-0 (25-16, 25-13, 25-10)

Canyon Crest defeated No. 4 Mar Vista 3-1 (22-25, 25-22, 25-13, 25-14)
