Boys Lacrosse: Titans Are One Big Happy Family

Coach Paul Sanit and his high-scoring son, Connor, are leading Poway to another fast start this year.

Paul Sanit has begun his seventh season as the head coach of the Poway High lacrosse team, and he is getting some added help on the field from his son, team captain Connor Sanit.

“He’s been coaching me since I was 6, so it all seems normal to me,” said Connor. “He treats me like any other player on the field.”

Currently Connor is one of the leading scorers on the Titans, who are off to a 2-0 start and plan to make some noise in the North League this year. On Wednesday night, Poway sent a message to the rest of the county, defeating a solid Scripps Ranch High team 18-6.

The Titans attack was sparked by Sanit, who had four goals and six assists. Coner Duddy had six goals and Matt Landon added five more.

“We came out to play tonight, and if we can keep playing like that we can beat anyone,” said Duddy. “Now we know what we can do.”

This year Sanit looks to be the main offensive attacker and facilitator for the Titans, which is nothing new for him. He led the team in scoring last season with 32 goals and 21 assists.

“He’s been around lacrosse along time. He’s our quarterback out there,” said coach Sanit. “It’s exciting and fulfilling for me, but he has to deal with me 24/7 and the rest of the team gets a break away from the field.”

Each of the last few years Poway has gotten off to strong starts, but the Titans were unable to win league or go deep into the CIF San Diego Section playoffs. They made it to the quarterfinals in 2009 and the semifinals in 2010, so this year the team looks to take the next step and earn a spot in the CIF finals.

“This year our chemistry is awesome, our whole team is close,” said Titans goalie Derek Scozzafaya. “If we play together we will go farther this year than in the past.”

Coach Sanit will have a lot to build off from last year’s team. The Titans only lost eight players and are bringing back 20 returning varsity players this year.

Included are last season's top scorers, Sanit and Henry Donahue (26 goals), plus senior captain Scozzafaya, who had 145 saves in 2010 and allowed an average of less than four goals per game.

“Our goal is always to win it all, but we just need to take it one game at a time,” said coach Sanit. “It’s early, but I liked our execution and our teamwork out there. We came out on fire tonight and we want to keep it going.”
