Boys Hoops: Monte Vista, Mount Miguel Advance

Helix also wins its opening-round playoff game as seven East County teams are eliminated.

Helix, Mount Miguel and Monte Vista were among only four East County boys basketball teams that survived Wednesday’s first round of the San Diego Section playoffs.

Six-foot-3 senior Kenny Keys rolled an impressive double-double of 15 points and 18 rebounds as Grossmont Hills League champion Helix (21-6) eliminated El Centro Southwest 59-27 in La Mesa.

At Mount Miguel, the Grossmont Valley League co-champion Matadors (21-7) outscored Olympian 29-16 in the second half to breeze to a 57-40 win over the Eagles (13-16). Thomas Butler paced Mount Miguel with 19 points and nine rebounds.

At Scripps Ranch, senior Brian Sterling scored 21 points and snagged 10 rebounds to help lead Monte Vista (16-10) past the Falcons 63-42. James Jackson added 15 points and 10 boards for the Monarchs.

Meanwhile, Foothills Christian buried Vista Calvary Christian 98-21 in Division V. Granite Hills, Grossmont, Steele Canyon, Valhalla, El Capitan, Santana and Christian all were eliminated.

All four winners advance to Saturday’s quarterfinals. Helix hosts Hilltop and Monte Vista travels to No. 1 Lincoln in Division II. Mount Miguel entertains Canyon Crest in Division III. Foothills Christian plays Vincent Memorial at a site to be determined. All games start at 7 p.m.
