Helping the Little Artist in All of Us

Almost all of us, at one point or another, in our childhoods or maybe even young adulthoods had the aspiration of being an artist. It is a very common aspiration for most children from the minute they pick up the finger paints and crayons.

Sage Turner is helping to support these young artists in the pursuit of their dreams. Because of spending cuts, funding for simple art supplies is hard to come by.

Turner is a motivated young artist who is committed to helping children in middle school become motivated young artists as well. That is why for her Senior Project she created six original pieces that she designed and painted for a small scale art show at Cosmos Café in downtown La Mesa in early May of 2013.

Turner said about the process of creating her pieces, “When I was creating the pieces, I would throw them away, love them , and hate them all at the same time.”

The next challenge Turner faced was coordinating with the people at Cosmo’s as to when her show would happen and how long her peices would be up. The most important part of the Senior Project is that there is some sort of “stretch” or challenge involved and for many seniors, it is coordinating with adults in the real world. Turner managed to figure out all the kinks and her show went off without a hitch.

People who attended Turner’s art show enjoyed refreshments that they could purchase from Cosmo’s and even included live music performed by a band comprised of a few of Turner’s friends called, “Hint of Lime.” The band played a few cover songs and even did some original songs.

Turner also raffled off one of her the pieces. All the money that she raised from the raffle tickets, which were 5 dollars each, were donated to La Mesa Middle School and used to purchase art supplies for the students.

Turner was concerned about the turnout of the event but afterwards she said, “at the show I had a lot of support from family, friends, and teachers.” Of course, all this support was greatly appreciated by Turner.

Turner expressed that she felt it was really important to help out these local programs, but that does not mean that it wasn’t difficult to find the drive to start. “At first” she said, “it was difficult to get started on the project and get the motivation to do the pieces.” Eventually, however Turner pulled it all together despite struggling with finishing the pieces, and her show turned out wonderfully.

Turner raised around three hundred dollars and improved her already amazing art talents at the same time.

Turner also said that she learned a valuable lesson throughout the experience of her senior project which was that, “Its easy to say that there is something you want to do but it isn’t that much harder to make it happen.”
