Fair Trade Ice Cream Promotes Obesity!

The promotion of Fair Trade Ice Cream and chocolate runs counter to the "Healthy Eating Active Living" resolution passed by the City Council in 2009.

Recently at a local coffee shop the proponants of Fair Trade La Mesa highlighted Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream for their cause of obtaining a La Mesa City resolution in support of their international social justice political agenda.

Ben and Jerry themselves mades millions of dollars in profit by selling this unhealthy confection. They originally were going to sell bagels (a usually healthy food) but decided that there was more money in ice cream sales. They made millions more selling the business to UNILEVER, a world-wide mega corporation. UNILEVER continues to profit with slick advertising aimed directly at a nation increasing in obesity in adults and the most vulnerable, our children.

The photo in the story is a perfect example of this targeted advertising.

The La Mesa "Healthy Eating Active Living" (HEAL) Resolution was implemented by the city council in 2009 specifically calling for the city to "do all it can to decrease the rate of obesity" in La Mesa citing the problems in personal health, lost productivity and medical costs that exceeds $41.2 billion a year. Each current elected official voted for this resolution.

By the HEAL policy the city must not endorse or support the promotion of, or profiteering from, ice cream or other low nutrician or high fat and calorie foods such as chocolate, even if it fits the in-vogue social justice political agenda of voting constituants.
