With Banged-Up Bulldozer Tony Dozier, Mount Miguel Beats Rival Monte Vista

Mount Miguel senior running back Tony Dozier limped off the field with 4 minutes left in the first half, getting his right ankle taped. In the fourth quarter, he held an ice bag to his left elbow after another hard hit, and watched from the sidelines. So his 291 yards and two touchdowns, leading his Matadors to a 24-7 victory Friday night over Spring Valley rival and host Monte Vista, were even more impressive than the stats showed.

“Wow — I had no idea I had that many,” Dozier told U-T San Diego of his 27 carries.  “It felt like I was running downhill the whole game. … It was a fun night. This was an important game for us because Monte Vista is our biggest rival, even bigger than Helix.”

Visiting Mount Miguel (2-4) thus opened its Grossmont Valley League season for coach Shaun McDade. Monte Vista, coached by Ron Hamamotto, fell to 2-4 overall and hosts Brethren Christian  of Huntington Beach.  Mount Miguel travels to El Cajon Valley on Friday.
