Clay Wilson Leads Grossmont to 14-10 Water Polo Victory Over Host Helix

The Foothillers raised their league record to 5-2, while the Scotties fell to 1-5.

Grossmont High School protected its lead in the fourth quarter to beat host Helix Charter High in boys water polo Wednesday evening. The Foothillers led the Scotties throughout the game, having an 8-3 edge at the half and winning 14-10 to boost its league record to 5-2. The Hillers have lost to Granite Hills twice.

Clay Wilson, with four goals, was the top scorer for Grossmont. Charlie Smith had three goals, and Julian Reisch, Grey Owen and Yoni Lansdtedt each scored twice.

Grossmont coach Clint McLaughlin protested penalty calls against the Foothillers, and drew a yellow card from a referee in the fourth quarter.

For Helix, Jake Smith led the team with three goals, Andrew Holtz had two and Jordan Taylor, Austin Elliot, Jason Chea, Eric Johnson and Tristan Rios each scored once. The Highlanders’ league record is 1-5.

On Thursday, Helix hosts Granite Hills and then faces Santana on Oct. 26 and Steele Canyon on Nov. 2. Grossmont's league play continues against West Hills at Santana High's pool on Friday, then hosts Steele Canyon on Oct. 26 and travels to Valhalla on Nov. 2.
