Signs of Joy in Monarchland as Families Signal to Monte Vista Grads

Principal Randy Montesanto recognized three retiring staff members but fought back tears in remembering Sam Rearic, a teacher who died Dec. 18.

Kristy Abruzzo works in guidance and campus security at Monte Vista High School, but she slapped hands and high-fived graduates like a best friend as the 400-member Class of 2013 filed toward their seats at Wednesday night’s commencement.

Principal Randy Montesanto delivered handshakes—to the valedictorians,  salutorians and seven seniors receiving top school honors.

Surprised as Gold Crown Award winners were Sarah Abrenica, Mitchell Gunter, Kayla Kulhanek, Emily Lopez, Felicia Porter, Daimen Sagastume and Tyler Shultz.

Not surprising were the dozens of signs in the stands as family and friends cheered the graduates as their names were read in a 70-minute ceremony.
