SDSU to Start Construction on South Campus Plaza

Preliminary work on a $143 million mixed-use development on the south side of the San Diego State University campus is due to begin this month, school officials announced Thursday.

South Campus Plaza will include housing for more than 600 students, along with retail outlets designed to serve both the campus and surrounding neighborhoods, creating what the school touts as a "pedestrian-friendly destination for shopping, dining and living" and a "dynamic gateway" to the university.

Major construction on the project, which will be located south of the SDSU Transit Center, between Hardy Avenue and Montezuma Road, is set to commence in September.

SDSU officials said the first phase of construction will consist of a pair of residential buildings above ground-floor shops, plus an adjacent parking structure to serve retail customers. Completion is scheduled for fall 2016.

A second phase, to be on the east side of College Avenue, will be built at a future, unspecified time. Funding is from bonds that will be paid back by retail, housing and parking revenue generated by the project.

No state funds, tuition or fees are being used, according to SDSU.
