SDSU Sees Record Number of Applicants

The number of applications to San Diego State University reached an all-time high this fall with nearly 78,000 people applying for fall 2014 admission.

The university received 55,719 applications for freshman admission and 21,221 applications for upper-division transfer admission by the Nov. 30 close of the application period for fall 2014 admission.

The overall number of applications is 5 percent greater than it was last year, when SDSU received 74,458 applications for fall 2013 admission, which was the new record at the time.

"We are excited to see this record interest in our academic programs," said SDSU President Elliot Hirshman. "This interest is a testament to the academic and professional success of our students and alumni, our university's growing national reputation and the dedicated efforts of our talented faculty and staff members."

The university will notify applicants of their admissions status by March 2014, according to SDSU.

The number of applications at SDSU are among the highest in the California State University system, but Cal State Long Beach receives an extremely high number of applications too.

Cal State Long Beach received 82,026 applications in the fall of 2012 for fall 2013 admission, according to their website.

Despite the high number of applications, most of the applicants will not end up attending SDSU. 

Of the 54,509 people who applied last year for freshmen admission this fall, the university offered admission to 20,292, or just over 37 percent. Of the 20,292 who were admitted, 4,760 accepted the offer and enrolled at the university, according to data provided by SDSU.

Of the 45,027 people who applied in 2011 for freshman admission in 2012, the university offered admission to 14,805, or about 33 percent. Of the 14,805 who were admitted, 4,019 accepted the offer and enrolled at the university, according to California State University data.

Freshmen admitted for fall 2013 had an average high school GPA of 3.6, an average SAT score of 1103 and an average ACT score of 24, according to data provided by SDSU.
