Scotties Down the Dons 48-14 to Quickly Assert Newfound Dominance

Helix races to a 34-0 halftime lead against visiting Cathedral Catholic High School, then cruises with second-stringers in much of the second half.

Helix Charter High School has outscored powerful football programs 90-21 over its past two games in the wake of a controversial loss to Eastlake High in its season opener. Friday night's victim was Cathedral Catholic High School (formerly University of San Diego High). 

With a 34-0 lead at halftime, the Scotties could relax a little in the second half. They gave up the final 14 points of the game to the Dons in the fourth quarter when many of the first-team players were benched, leading to a final score of 48-14.

Kendal Keys opened the scoring with 3:39 left in the first quarter, hauling in an 11-yard TD pass from Brandon Lewis. Two minutes later, Cameron Lee returned an intercption 49 yards for a score to make it 14-0 Helix.

Darrion Hancock took over from there, scoring the next four Highlander touchdowns on runs of 3, 6, 12 (all in the second quarter) and 22 yards. Kene Anigbogu scored on a 14-yard pass from Lewis midway through the third quarter to complete the Helix scoring.

Lewis completed 11 of 19 passes for 192 yards and two TDs, while Hanckock had an even 100 yards on 12 carries plus his four touchdowns. Keys was the leading receiver with three catches for 70 yards. The defense caused three Cathedral turnovers.

Next week is a bye week for Helix, and the Highlanders return to action Sept. 30 against Venice High School in Los Angeles.
