Renaissance Faire, Complete with Code of Chivalry, Comes to School
La Mesa Middle students will learn about history by living it for a day.
is at it again. Last week students staged had a Civil War re-enactment. This week it’s their second annual Medieval Times and Renaissance Faire for seventh-grade world history students.
Organized by eighth-grade history teacher Eileen LaVine and seventh-grade history teachers Jennifer Schroeder and Heather Filippelli, Lavine says the kids have learned a lot since their first run-through, including the art of fencing with what she calls “practice boppers.”
“When I saw them just trying to whack at each other—think of the whack-a-mole game at Chuck E. Cheese—I actually made them learn the fencing stance, grip and lunge,” Lavine said. “At one point, our dean, Rob Myrick, and I began to duel. The kids loved that!”

Lavine says this is a chance for students to explore the history, literature and the philosophy of the code of chivalry, something she wants students to know is still alive and well today.
The event takes place Wednesday, June 1, on campus.
