Rally Against Draconian Budget Cuts in K-12 Education on Friday

Jay Steiger: In a "cuts only" budget, there would be more than $9 million in cuts to the La Mesa Spring Valley School District and more than $18 million to the Grossmont Union High School District.

To the editor:

As a member of the California Education Coalition, the California State PTA joins school administrators, teachers, staff, and school board members in support of statewide rallies to show support for education.

The local rally will be from 4-6 p.m. Friday, May 13, at Embarcadero Marina Park North.  The La Mesa Spring Valley area Mt. Helix Council of PTAs joins with other local PTA groups in support of this rally and we hope to see district parents, school employees, and concerned community members in attendance.

There will be high school student musical performances from 4 to 5 and then speakers from local education and student groups, including the PTA, from 5 to 6.  Carpooling or riding the trolley is suggested as parking is limited.

The California State PTA supports the governor’s budget plan to mix some spending cuts with an extension on selected revenues to allow K-12 education to be largely protected from further cuts.

In a “cuts only” budget, education would see $4.5 billion to $5.5 billion in new cuts— $4.5 billion would equate to more than $9 million in cuts to the La Mesa Spring Valley School District and more than $18 million to the Grossmont Union High School District.

Please join us in calling for No More Cuts!
