Parent Sought for Oversight Committee in Grossmont Union High School District

CBOC keeps track of projects at Grossmont, Helix Charter and other schools funded by propositions.

The Grossmont Union High School District again is looking for a good watchdog. The community board that oversees Proposition H and U spending and construction seeks a parent for the group, the district says.

Called the Citizens’ Bond Oversight Committee, or CBOC, the 11-member panel has an opening for a parent at large—a parent or guardian of a child enrolled in the district—a two-year appointee who will serve a two-year term beginning October 2011.

This appointee would be eligible for a second two-year term, the district said. (Application info is attached.)

District spokeswoman Catherine Martin said Sunday night that the vacancy is due to the resignation of Jose Ortiz, the previous member who served in the category of parent/guardian of a child enrolled in the district.

The CBOC oversees the execution of Proposition H, the $274 million school bond measure in March 2004 to renovate district schools, including Grossmont and Helix Charter high schools, Mount Miguel and Monte Vista in Spring Valley and Santana and West Hills in Santee.

“Preference may be given to individuals possessing skills, training and experience in communications and marketing,” said the district. “Experience in finance, facilities, and/or construction may also be considered.”

Candidates must be at least 18, can’t work for the district and not be employed as or by a vendor, contractor, or consultant of this district.

Monthly meetings of the committee are typically scheduled on the last Wednesday of each month at the Grossmont High School Library, beginning at 5 p.m.

Deadline for applications is noon Friday, Sept. 30.

Once applications are received, all qualified applications will be reviewed by a screening committee. After screening is complete, selected applicants will be invited to attend the Oct. 13 governing board meeting,
