No Instruments, No Mikes, No Problem: Grossmont High Excels in Annual Air Band Contest in Old Gym

Annual competition involved at least 100 students, plus a 1960s-70s medley by two dozen teachers.

On the oldest stage in the school district, the New Kids on the Block topped five entries in Wednesday night’s annual Grossmont High School Air Band competition—enthralling about 400 cheering, hooting parents and students in the Old Gym.  Organized by the Associated Student Body, the event drew at least 100 performers plus two dozen faculty members, who pranced to Beatles and Beach Boys tunes in tie-dyed shirts, beads and headbands.

Among the students,Grossmont Zoo was second and Bonquiqui third in the event going back at least 20 years, said Megan Long, the girls basketball coach and Link Crew (freshman orientation) adviser who’s been involved with the event six years. Prize money of $125, $75 and $50 helped the groups defray expenses as the top two qualified for district air band in April. “It’s more for the pride than the money,” said Long, who also oversaw the judges.
