Monte Vista's Emily Lopez Highlights All-Academic Athletes from Spring Valley High Schools

Monte Vista High School cross-country runner Emily Lopez was selected as one of eight captains for The San Diego Union-Tribune’s fall sports All-Academic Teams.

Lopez, who carries a 4.54 GPA and is ranked third in her class, may very well have 14 varsity letters by graduation, according to the Union-Tribune.

Lopez went on to the cross country State Championships for the second consecutive year, finishing 18th with a time of 18:22 in the 3.1-mile race.

“She’s one of the finest scholar-athletes in the county,” Monte Vista cross country and track coach Antoine Woods told the Union-Tribune.

The Union-Tribune reported Sunday that it and the county Office of Education invited all San Diego Section schools to take part in the Academic All-Stars program.

“The 2011-12 fall season for high school sports begins the 27th year of the Union-Tribune All-Academic Team,” the paper said. “For the 2010-11 school year, about 15,000 All-Academic Team certificates were awarded among the approximately 160,000 high school students in the San Diego [CIF] Section.”

Captains are selected for their academic and athletic achievement and overall leadership.
