Monte Vista Coach Chad Williams Picked to Lead Grossmont Baseball

"We got the guy we wanted to lead our program. He's a good one," said GHS assistant principal.

Chad Williams has been named new baseball coach at Grossmont High School, succeeding veteran skipper Jim Earley, as the Foothillers again tapped the Spring Valley pipeline.

In April, Tom Karlo of Spring Valley’s was hired to coach the Grossmont football team in the wake of coach Ron Murphy’s cancer death.

Williams guided Spring Valley’s Monte Vista High School for two years, where he compiled a 32-27 overall record.

The hire was first reported by East County Sports, which quoted Grossmont High Vice Principal Donnie Carroll as saying: “We got the guy we wanted to lead our program. He’s a good one.”

The Monarchs had season records of 22-11 and 10-16 in 2011 and 2012, respectively. The Foothillers went 8-22 this season, including 20 straight losses, and in mid-May amid parental accusations of wrongdoing.

Williams starred at Granite Hills High School in El Cajon, and was a three-time all-league selection and two-time team MVP. He played for San Diego State under Tony Gwynn and transferred to Chico State, where he boasted a .310 batting average over two years—2005 and 2006.

Williams played in two Division II College World Series. Chico State lost to No. 1-ranked University of Tampa  in the 2006 series 3-2 at Riverwalk Stadium in Montgomery, AL.

He returned to Granite Hills as an assistant coach and became head coach at Monte Vista in 2011.

According to the San Diego Gamers baseball club, where he has coached at least four years, Williams enjoys fishing, golf and surfing.
