Miss La Mesa in the Running for Homecoming Queen at San Diego State

Katie Martin would be the second Miss La Mesa to boast the Aztec title if she wins the crown Saturday at TCU game halftime.

Katie Martin is hoping Aztecs lightning strikes twice in La Mesa.

Martin, a San Diego State University senior, is in the running for Homecoming queen Saturday. If she wins, she’ll be the second Miss La Mesa to hold that title—after Troy Lemperle, Miss La Mesa 2003.

Lemperle was SDSU Homecoming queen in 2002.

Martin was selected last week as one of seven female Homecoming Court members after being nominated by the ISCOR Student Society, according to Alex Kuty, the local pageant organizer.

Martin is majoring in international security and conflict resolution. She has a double minor in political science and anthropology and holds a 3.81 grade-point average, according to the school.  She has also served as an intern on Capitol Hill and is a member of five honor societies.

“After her nomination, she completed an extensive application process showcasing her scholarship, leadership and service contributions to her community,” Kuty said.

“Martin was also required to submit a proposal for a campuswide service project, which the winner would carry out if selected.  Martin’s proposal focused on a disability awareness event because of her experiences with Fibromyalgia.

Besides being the current Miss La Mesa, Martin was
Miss Poway 2008 and Miss East San Diego 2010.

Along with six other nominees, Martin will take part in multiple activities this week, including Thursday’s Pep Rally.

The Homecoming queen will be announced during halftime of Saturday’s Aztec Game vs. Texas Christian University at 7:30 p.m. at Qualcomm Stadium.
