With another three-game sweep, the Helix Charter High School boys team stayed perfect in volleyball. Tuesday night, the Highlanders beat visiting Monte Vista with scores of 25-2, 25-5 and 25-15 to boost their season record to 3-0. Scotties senior Brett Konold led the team with 13 kills, while junior Vann Sabin led with 19 attack attempts. Junior Damien Feistel had 17 digs and four service aces to top the Highlanders.
Monte Vista coach Michael Skibbe said his team has only two returning players from last year, adding that his starting lineup has three juniors and three sophomores.
“This team is more athletic than it's ever been,” he said. “I’m not buying that it will be a good year next year. I’m buying that it will be a good year this year.” Including tournament play, the Monarchs are 7-6 this season.
Helix coach Dave Mattas said his entire team is back, including five seniors. “It’s definitely been a growing experience [the last three years], but things are finally coming together.” He added, “We will be very competitive in league.”
The Monarchs suffered their third straight loss. The team hosts Granite Hills on Thursday, while the Scotties travel to Spring Valley to play Mount Miguel.
