Helix Students to Reprise SADD Reality Party on Teen Binge Drinking

Parents are invited to free event, which offers tips on how they can help change the culture.

Helix Charter High School’s chapter of SADD—Students Against Destructive Decisions—is again inviting parents to a party that serves a large dose of reality.

On Thursday, Feb. 9, the group will host the product of Straight Up Reality Improv, a nonprofit group that fights underage and binge drinking.

The group simulates a teen drinking party and invites parents to tour the (secret) location where the party takes place (no alcohol actually is served). Helix’s SADD group takes part as party “attendees.” Action at the party is loosely scripted, with teens acting out different roles.

This is the second year Helix’s SADD Chapter has hosted this event. Last year’s event helped the group earn the 2010-11 SADD National Chapter of the Year award, says school spokeswoman Jennifer Osborn.

Tours will run every half-hour from 4-9 p.m.  Parents from the entire community are invited—not just those from Helix families, Osborn says.

Tours are free—but open only to parents, and a reservation is required. The party will take place in La Mesa; the specific location will be given when a reservation is made. Helix’s SADD Chapter is sponsored by DCH Honda of Lemon Grove.

“The event is designed to expose the underage and binge drinking culture; many adults view drinking as a rite of passage, but are not aware of how much things have changed since they were teens,” Osborn says.

“The Reality Party allows them to see what today’s parties are like to raise awareness of what teens are facing in these social settings. Parents will also hear suggestions for how they can help change the culture and keep their kids safe.”

Straight Up Project Director Katherine Kasmir says: “Some parents believe there’s not much they can do. They are just told to talk to their teens. A better understanding of the specific issues teens are dealing with today, and the culture of risky behaviors, will allow parents to have more relevant and meaningful dialogue with their teens, to set clear expectations and implement family policies that help keep their teens safe.”

Event attendees are also invited to take part in a discussion following their tour. The discussion panel will include teens, law enforcement, educators, mental health professionals, and others to field questions and facilitate discussion.
