Helix Streaks Past Steele Canyon 49-7 to Claim Grossmont Hills League Title

Highlander defense holds a league foe to 7 points or fewer for the sixth straight game.

Two shirtless streakers ran onto the field, past players and officials and then out the south end of the Steele Canyon Charter High School football stadium with about 1½ minutes left to play in the game. That might have been the highlight of Thursday night’s Helix game for Cougar fans.

The No. 1-ranked Scotties were near perfect again—beating league-unbeaten Steele Canyon 49-7 to claim another Grossmont Hills League championship and an expected Division II top seed in the CIF San Diego section playoffs.

Former San Diego High School and UConn basketball star Charde Houston of the WNBA champion Minnesota Lynx watched her brother Kene Anigbogu play for Helix, and the Highlanders were up 35-0 at halftime.

Steele Canyon’s only score came in the third quarter.

Darrion Hancock opened Helix scoring with an 80-yard touchdown run, followed by quarterback Brandon Lewis running for a 4-yard TD.  Michael Adkins had an 8-yard TD run, and Kendal Keys a 57-yard catch for score from Lewis.

Senior defender Romello Carbuccia intercepted a Cougar pass and ran it back 11 yards for a Helix touchdown.  In the second half, Cameron Lee scored on a 11-yard reception, and Jimmy Pruitt caught a Lewis pass for a 3-yard score.

Pairings for CIF section playoffs will be announced Saturday, with Helix expected to get a first-game bye as the top seed.
