Helix Reigns With a Light Touch, Beating Granite Hills 63-7 in the Mist and Drizzle
Michael Adkins scores on plays of 79, 80 and 51 yards as the Scotties up record to 8-1.
Junior running back Michael Adkins scored thrice—including a 79-yard passing touchdown and an 2-yard rushing TD—to lead Helix Charter High School over visiting Granite Hills 63-7 on a rain-soaked field Friday night. Darrion Hancock added TDs of 6 and 80 yards as the Scotties went into halftime up 51-0, including an Adkins 51-yard rushing score.
Even Highlander miscues turned to gold, such as when Cameron Lee fumbled the ball—only to be picked up by Jimmy Pruitt, who ran it in for a 30-yard score. The only Helix touchdown of the second half on offense was an 84-yard run by Tyree Hunter. To keep the score from inflating gratuitously, coach Troy Starr twice ordered the backup offense to take a knee instead of kicking a point after TD.
A couple dozen hardy Eagles fans made the trek from eastern El Cajon for the game, while hundreds of Helix fans and band members huddled under umbrellas or shade tents as a misty, steady rain dampened everything at Jim Arnaiz Field. Ranked No. 1 in the county, ninth in the state and 53rd in the nation (according to maxpreps.com), the 8-1 Highlanders travel Thursday to 7-2 Steele Canyon, another charter school, for a battle of league unbeatens and the Grossmont Hills League title at stake.
