Helix RB Michael Adkins Earns 'Offensive Player of the Year' Award

Adkins joins fellow Helix alums Reggie Bush and Alex Smith as past NFF Scholar-Leader Athletes from San Diego.

Helix Charter High School running back Michael Adkins will be honored Friday night with by the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame – Walter J. Zable/San Diego Chapter with the award for Outstanding Offensive Player of the Year.

The presitgious awards banquet will be held Friday, March 29 at 6 p.m. at the Scottish Rite Center in Mission Valley, and will honor 22 high school and four college football players from the San Diego County for their outstanding effort on the football field and in the classroom.

The Outstanding Defensive Player of the Year award will go to Madison High’s Keoni Kanoa.

The four college athletes that will be honored are:

Chris Bonner (Grossmont College)
Brett Nelson (Southwestern College)
Matt Peleti (USD)
D.J. Shields (SDSU)

These athletes will join an impressive group of past NFF Scholar-Leader Athletes from San Diego, including the late Junior Seau and former Helix stars and current NFL players Reggie Bush and Alex Smith.

Oakland Raiders linebacker and former San Diego State star Miles Burris was a recipient of a Scholar-Leader-Athlete Award from the NFF-Walter J. Zable/San Diego Chapter last year.

All of the Scholar-Leader-Athlete Award winners will receive a $1,000 scholarship. Adkins and Kanoa will receive a $1,500 scholarship by virtue of their Player of the Year awards.

Scholar-Leader Athlete’s were nominated by their coaches based on a combination of their performance on the field, grades in the classroom and volunteer work in the community. The some 100 nominations were looked over by the NFF-Walter J. Zable/San Diego Chapter Board Members and of those 26 were selected.

The NFF-Walter J. Zable/San Diego Chapter is sponsored by many in the community, including the San Diego Chargers, Higgs Fletcher and Mack, Union Bank, Liquid Investments and the Zable Foundation.
